Description

Wooden key fiddle (Nyckelharpa) owned by Axel Joel Hedman (1885 - 1971) who was involved in Swedish folk dancing and music at Skansen Museum in Sweden.

Context

Axel Joel Hedman (1885 - 1971 moved to the United States in 1913 and worked as a cabinet and furniture maker and as a carpenter. The nyckelharpa was popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries and was a focal sound in Swedish folk music. By the mid-20th century, the instrument had decreased in popularity and use. However, by the 1960s and 1970s the nyckelharpa had a resurgence and began being used in contemporary music.
