Description

Metal, possible brass, letter opener with hammered handle design with an image of the Augustana Hospital building with "1884-1974, Our First Ninety Years Augustana Hospital and Health Care Center, Chicago Illinois" on the end of the handle, blade plain. Dated circa 1974.

Context

This letter opener was on the desk of the previous Executive Director at the Swedish American Museum, Kerstin B. Lane, and in use for "several years." Estimated that it was given to her about 1988. Augustana School of Nursing opened in 1894 at 480 Cleveland Avenue to train nurses of Scandinavian descent. The school first admitted non-Scandinavian students to the training program in 1905. By the time it closed in 1989, Augustana graduated over 3,000 nurses.
