Description

Beige-covered book with a green spine entitled "Med Pensel och Penna" which translates to '"The Brush and Pen." The author is Birger Sandzén. It was published by the Augustana Book Concern in Rock Island, Illinois in 1915. The front cover is decorated with two beige, orange, brown, and black bowls, one of which is substantially larger than the other and filled with brushes which are a combination of beige and black.

Context

Birger Sandzén was born in 1871 in Västergötland, Sweden. Sandzén studied art with Arvid Nyholm, Anders Zorn, and Richard Berg in the Arts League of Stockholm, and with Edmond François Aman-Jean in Paris in the late 19th century. In the 1890s, he moved to Lindsborg, Kansas and taught art at Bethany College until 1946. Sandzén was a prolific painter and printmaker throughout his life until he passed away in 1954. His work is characterized by landscape scenes of the American West and Southwest, particularly Utah and New Mexico.
