Painting of a covered boat, with a large bell in a pavilion at the prow and three flags on posts along its length, docked at a jetty, with passengers on and approaching its gangway. A white flag on the prow reads, "Bethel," and yellow lettering below it on the side reads, "J. Wesley." Inscribed along the bottom is, "The BETHEL SHIP - A home for Swedish immigrants in New York on their way to Chikago [sic]. During the 1840's," and lower, signed and dated.

Lars Gillis (1929-2012) was a Swedish artist, writer, composer, and poet, known for his mural work. He created several wall paintings at the Swedish American Museum, such as the Brunk Children's Museum, and in the Andersonville neighborhood, including the SVEA Restuarant 5236 N. Clark St.
