Description

Clear glass bottle of Swedish American Line Aquavit with a blue, yellow, and white label. The bottle has the inscription, "Genuine S.A.L. Aquavit produced in Sweden by Aktiebolaget Vin- & Spritcentralen Stockholm. Specially flavored and bottled for the Swedish American Line-4/5 Quart 80 Proof." A piece of beige masking tape is affixed to the bottle (by donor) stating that it is from the 1928 trip.

Context

This bottle was from Donald and Mary Johnson's last trip to Sweden in 1928. The Swedish American Line (SAL) opened in 1915 and was used for immigrant travel until the mid-1920s. The SAL had four ships, SS Stockholm, TS Drottningholm, MS Gripsholm, and SS/MS Kungsholm. Ships ran direct from Gothenburg to New York. By the end of the 1920s, the SAL became a luxury cruise and tourist line, which many people used to travel between Sweden and the U.S.
