Description

A monthly issue of "Vikingen," a newsletter for the Independent Order of Vikings. The yellow front cover celebrates the Golden Jubilee of the organization's founding. The contents include a history of the organization, a list of Officers of the Grand Lodge, the location of local lodges, membership statistics, and financial records.

Context

Established in 1891 to provide a community for Swedish working-class men in Chicago, the Independent Order of Vikings offered members health insurance, promoted self-improvement, and celebrated Swedish culture and Norse mythology. In 1904, Swedish-American women began their own Order, which they disbanded when women were allowed full membership in the original order in 1933. Today, the Independent Order of Vikings still has lodges across the U.S. celebrating Scandinavian heritage and culture.
