Context

This letter gives insight into the hopes and fears of the family members that stayed behind as they watched their loved ones leave for a new home. Families and friends wrote letters back home to each other as some immigrated to America. Many wrote of rich open farmland and cities full of opportunity. Others wrote of the hardships they faced in a new land. Maria Larsson writes: “My brothers have America fever and of course I do not know about a cure... Frida, do you think that you could tell Per to write to Axel and tell him there is no work for him and it is hard for people in America?”
