Description

Two 33 rpm vinyl music records, a record sleeve, and an in-sleeve booklet from various artists compiled in a collection of Swedish and Swedish-American songs relating to or from emigrants and immigrants, produced by Caprice Records and released in 1981.

Context

About 1.3 million Swedes immigrated to America between 1846 and 1930. Most of them turned their backs on a life of agrarian poverty in Sweden, hoping for something better in the United States. The dream of America and emigration there gave rise to many songs and ballads. This vinyl contains ballads which became popular among the Swedes in America, and songs which were sung back home in Sweden, reflecting this dream. "From Sweden to America" was reissued as a CD in 1996, the 150th anniversary of the start of the "great exodus" of Swedish emigration to the United States. The recorded songs indicate the importance of songs and music in a new home, as well as the spread of the knowledge of the American dream back home to Sweden.
