Description

Pair of Sámi Nuvttohat (Swedish: Bällingsko) reindeer boots from the Sápmi region in Sweden. The outside is brownish-tan or grayish-brown and made of fur. Each boot has a red semi-oval structure in the part of the upper section that is farthest from the heel. Each boot is held together with a largely red and black ribbon decorated with diamond shapes in red and yellow, or black and yellow.

Context

Nuvttohat, as they are known in the Northern Sámi language, are boots are traditional winter wear and typically made from reindeer hide from the animal's legs or head. They are an important part of the traditional Sámi costume, gákti, (Swedish: kolt).
