Context

Carl John Johnson handmade this trunk, likely especially for emigrating to the United States. He was born on Dec. 21, 1822, in Småland, Sweden. He brought this trunk to the United States in 1868 or 1869. Johnson was the youngest of eleven children. He attended college for a short time in Malmö, Sweden where he took pipe organ and voice lessons. He later became the choir director and organist in his home church in Jönköpings län, Småland. The church with red bricks in still in use. At the age of 26 or 27, he married Marguereite. He farmed a small portion of land. The name of his home was Kulla Alsheda socken (Kulla Alsheda Parish). Carl John and Marguerite had a family of eight children.
