White-covered dinner menu from the Swedish Club of Chicago dated Apr. 11, 1954. The front cover is decorated with the coat of arms of Sweden and the words "The Swedish Club of Chicago" written in yellow and blue letters. The back cover is decorated with the emblems of Sweden's twenty-four provinces and a picture of the Town Hall and its terrace in Stockholm.Context
Members of the fraternal singing society Föreningen Freja established the Swedish Club of Chicago (Svenska Klubben, 1882 - 1984) as a social club open to any American of Swedish birth. Their clubhouse on LaSalle Street in downtown Chicago was a gathering place for area Swedish-Americans in the area. The club held exhibitions, lectures, and concerts to celebrate and preserve Swedish culture. The club also rented out rooms for members’ private events.Acquisition
