Context

Members of the fraternal singing society Föreningen Freja established the Swedish Club of Chicago (Svenska Klubben, 1882 - 1984) as a social club open to any American of Swedish birth. Their clubhouse on LaSalle Street in downtown Chicago was a gathering place for area Swedish-Americans in the area. The club held exhibitions, lectures, and concerts to celebrate and preserve Swedish culture. The club also rented out rooms for members’ private events.
