Description

Tan woven basket made of birch roots, made by an unknown Sámi artisan.

Context

Practical yet beautiful woven baskets made of tree roots such as fir tree or birch are very sturdy and can withstand the rigor of traveling. They have long been made and used by the Sámi people. The roots need to be scraped free of bark then put in water to make bendable before weaving. Baskets like this one can be used for several things, for example food storage or sometimes cheese molds. Sámi women are traditionally in charge of basket weaving.
