Description

A Sámi cradleboard made of reindeer leather, with red and yellow felt. A woven band and a piece of woven cotton is used to shield the child from the sun and wind.

Context

A cradleboard is a portable carrier used to carry and move an infant. The styles vary across the world but are usually designed to be versatile. They can often be carried on one's back, stood up and leaned against something, or hung or attached to for example a branch or animal. It is common in many Indigenous cultures across the world, including in North America, as well as the Sámi in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and of the Kola Peninsula in Russia.
