2020.2.2Description
A cup-shaped vessel, possibly a traditional Swedish wedding vessel or marriage bowl of some sort according to what the donor was told by the Santa Fe Museum of Folk Art. The vessel is shaped like a traditional Scandinavian cup, similar to the traditional kuksa/guksi/kåsa cup though less like a dipper bowl and more like a miniature pitcher. The cup has a flared spout and oval-shaped basin that is longer than it is wide. The handle flares out from the cup body and has decorative triangular notches and holes throughout. Almost the entirety of the cup exterior has low relief decorative carving, featuring triangular designs around the edges and leaf-like designs slightly raised above a stippled background on the two sides of the cup basin. The cup basin appears hand-carved, not turned.Acquisition
