Description

Wooden ship model of the Swedish American Line ship Gripsholm. The boat appears to have four decks with small dots for windows. The upper part of the boat has a brown, wooden floor, white and brown structures, and a white two-story tower. A green stripe reaches all the way around the lower part of the boat. The text "Gripsholm" is written on each side of the front of the boat in black letters.

Context

The Swedish American Line (SAL) opened in 1915 and was used for immigrant travel until the mid-1920s. The SAL had four ships, SS Stockholm, TS Drottningholm, MS Gripsholm, and SS/MS Kungsholm. Ships ran direct from Gothenburg to New York. By the end of the 1920s, the SAL became a luxury cruise and tourist line, which many people used to travel between Sweden and the U.S.
