Scope and Content

Collection contains Jacobson family history, photographs, a scrapbook, newspaper clippings, a DVD, and VHS tapes. The scrapbook, newspaper clippings, the DVD, and one of the VHS tapes pertains to the July 1956 Andrea Doria shipwreck, created by Selma Jacobson. Selma had been a passenger aboard the Stockholm, the ship that collided with the Andrea Doria. An essay on her experience is included in the collection.

Context

The SS Andrea Doria was a luxury cruise liner of the Italian Line out of Genoa, Italy. It had been approaching Nantucket, United States, during heavy fog, and had collided with ocean liner Stockholm, from the Swedish American Line. Tragically, 46 people lost their lives. 1,660 of the passengers and crew were rescued.
