"Historical Review of the Vasa Order of America-District Lodge Illinois No. 8" by Bertil G. Winstrom. The book covers the activities of the period from 1969-87.Context
Founded in 1896 in New Haven, Connecticut, Vasa’s Chicago chapter opened in 1908 with the goal to teach Swedish-born men learn English and the ways of a new country. The club originated as a fraternal benefit organization providing health and life insurance and evolved to preserve and foster Nordic heritage. Women established three lodges in Chicago from 1908 - 1918. In 1916, many men’s lodges began admitting women members.
Today, the Chicago area has six active lodges, where they hold Swedish language, singing, and culture classes.Acquisition
