Name/Title

The Amistad Series: Repatriation of the Freed Captives

Description

In the final Amistad mural, the freed Africans and missionaries with the American Missionary Association alight on the shores of Africa. The artist presents Cinque's transformation by portraying him in Western attire - vest, long pants, and proper shoes instead of the boots and and work shirt he wore at the trial. Behind Cinque is James Steele, and facing him is William Raymond. Behind Raymond is missionary George Wilson. Symbols and symbolic gestures reflect the objectives of the missionaries.
