Item Description:
Chinese ink rubbing depicting the Buddhist monk Xuanzang (602–664), also known as Tang Sanzang, on his pilgrimage to India. The central figure is shown carrying a large, multi-tiered pack of sutra scrolls, wearing a belted robe and sandals, and holding a fly whisk. A small sword or dagger is visible at his waist.
The top right reads "Biography of the Dharma Master Xuanzang" (玄共法師傳). Other text describes his journey, with references to places and distances traveled.
Significance:
Xuanzang's historic journey to collect Buddhist scriptures is a central story in Chinese Buddhism and is the basis for the classic novel Journey to the West. The rubbing technique preserves and reproduces significant historical and religious imagery, such as that found at the Xingjiao Temple in Shaanxi, from which similar depictions originate.
