This volume, The Four Books, or The Chinese Classics in English, presents an English translation of the Sishu (Four Books), which form the foundation of Confucian philosophy. The collection comprises The Great Learning (Daxue), The Doctrine of the Mean (Zhongyong), The Analects of Confucius (Lunyu), and The Works of Mencius (Mengzi).
The editor of this edition remains unknown; according to the title page, it was “compiled from the best previous works.” It was printed in 1898 in Hong Kong by Man Yu Tong. Reflecting traditional Chinese book culture, the volume is bound to be read from back to front and printed on fine rice paper, giving it a delicate, translucent quality characteristic of high-quality publications of its time.
