Description

Chinese ink rubbing on hemp paper depicting Guan Fuzi, also known as Guan Yu, Guan Gong or Guandi, seated in formal robes with his characteristic long beard. The image derives from a Qing dynasty stele inscription attributed to Dalishan, dated to the 43rd year of the Kangxi reign, 1704. The work is accompanied by a 1979 provenance letter from John W. Guy, stating that he received the piece during his stay in Xi’an between 1943 and 1945, and by a 1999 appraisal by Anthony M. Lee / Asian Art Research. A historically and culturally significant rubbing connected to the worship of Guan Yu as a symbol of loyalty, justice and martial virtue.
