Mollusc_2

Name/Title

Mollusc_2

Description

Mollusc shells are commonly found when exploring sedimentary rock formations in east central Illinois because the area was once covered in prehistoric oceans. Mollusc_1 is an edition of small sculptures that relate to the actual, fictional, and future fossil record at the Tarble Arts Center. It was generated using 3D modeling software using the contour lines that outline the major watershed patterns within which the museum is located. Each watershed pattern is nested within the larger watershed that contains it, from largest to smallest: Mississippi River watershed (first contour), Ohio River watershed (second contour), Wabash River watershed (third contour), Embarrass River watershed (fourth contour), Tarble Arts Center hardscape (fifth contour). Much like a handheld seashell embodies the sound of an expansive ocean, Mollusc_1 embodies the watershed at a scale that can be held in one's hand.
