This sampler was made by Ann Hopkinson in 1814 when she was 11 years old. The Hopkinson family lived in Buxton Maine. Ann was born November 21, 1803 to Stephen and Rachel (Lombard) Hopkinson and was the 5th of 7 children. The Lombard family was one of the original families of Gorham, Maine, a small town near Buxton. Rachel's father was a Revolutionary War minuteman who helped defend the town of Falmouth from the British.
This sampler is an excellent example of the New England schoolgirl tradition of embroidery from the early 19th century. These samplers recorded and preserved important information about the family.Made/Created
