Description

Backstrap loom with green and orange warp threads. Loom includes front and back beams, thin cloth beams at each end of the loom, and four string heddle rods, each attached to a different set of warp threads. Strings attaching heddle rods are yellow, red, and green.

Context

String heddle rods are used to create the second shed in the warp yarns. While it is possible to weave on a backstrap loom using multiple string heddles, it is also possible that the multiple string heddles were added to this loom as a teaching lesson/example. The cloth beam, which can be called a 'roll up stick' or a 'shed rod' aids in rolling up the woven cloth as the weaving progresses, and rolling up the loom when not in use.
