Retailer description: "A miniature work of art, the Coalport thimble bears a handcrafted porcelain rose typical of the delicate handmade floral decorations for which this porcelain house has long been famous. This company traces its beginning back to the late 18th century when there were two porcelain factories located on the Severn River at Coalport in Shropshire. One of these, belonging to John Rose, was called Rose Blakeway & Co. Old records show that the prince and princess of Orange visited the plant in 1796, so it is quite likely that the firm had already been in existence for several years. It is difficult to distinguish the earliest wares of the company since prior to 1805 none of its pieces were marked, and many of them were sent to London or Bristol to be decorated. In 1820 John Rose was awarded a Society of Arts Medal for his lead-free feldspar glaze. During the following period many of his pieces carried circular marks with the words, 'Coalport Feldspar Porcelain.' That same year, painter William Billingsley entered the firm, and thereafter the painting and decoration done at the plan showed his fine talent and expertise. By the early years of the Victorian period Coalport had already become widely recognized. Rococo in feeling, the vases, baskets and jugs also known as Coalbrookdale influenced the company’s entire production for many years. Coalport continues to produce its much-admired traditional patterns in fine bone china."Collection
