Retailer description: "The delightfully colorful 'Fruit Basket' pattern on this thimble is an adaptation of one of the traditional designs seen on the fine bone china tableware of Crown Staffordshire. This famous company can be traced back to the Churchyard Works in Burslem, the original center of the pottery industry of Staffordshire County in west central England. Burslem and its neighboring towns made up the Potteries district, one of the best-known areas in England for the production of fine porcelain and glass. Thomas Green bought the Churchyard Works, an earthenware factory, in 1795, but unfortunately went bankrupt in 1811. His son, Thomas Green the younger, eventually returned to the Potteries and worked for two other companies before establishing his own business at Fenton in partnership with his brother-in-law in 1833. During this time the pottery industry in North Staffordshire had begun the tremendous growth which continued through the 19th century. After Green’s death, his widow Margaret took over the business which became M. Green & Co., and when she died in 1877 her sons continued trading as T.A.&S. Green. In 1903 the firm became Crown Staffordshire Porcelain Co. Ltd., and continued to be operated by the Green family until it became part of the Wedgwood Group in 1973. Among the most admired products of Crown Staffordshire are the exquisite bone china flowers made entirely by hand in a technique perfected at the turn of the century."Collection
