Retailer description: "This fine porcelain thimble from England’s Royal Albert bears a miniature adaptation of a classic design known as “Old Country Roses,” created by Harold Holdcroft who joined the firm in 1934. The design, now a world leader, was first introduced in 1962 and has become so popular internationally that it has also been used in table crystal, and a textile manufacturer has even reproduced the pattern for use in tablecloths. Almost all of Royal Albert’s delicate, pure white, translucent bone china is decorated with garden flowers in natural colors. The Royal Albert firm was originally founded by Thomas Wild of Longton, England. The son of a pottery worker, he was born at Lane End in Longton, Stroke-on-Tent, in 1841. In 1896, two years before Thomas Wild’s death, he had taken over the Albert Works in Longton — a ceramic firm named in commemoration of Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria. Fortunately, he was able to persuade his son, Thomas Clarke Wild, to join him in his enterprise. The son Thomas had worked in a pottery from the age of eight, and has become the owner of his own small pottery business. Their enterprise, Thomas Wild & Company, specialized in bone china and breakfast sets. By the 1898 the firm was generally known as the Royal Albert Crown China Works. This company absorbed various other porcelain works and modernized its manufacturing methods. In 1964 Royal Albert became part of Royal Doulton Tableware Limited."Collection
