Name/Title

Saki-ori obi

Entry/Object ID

2017.1.7

Description

Kimono obi with a checkered blue and white pattern. The checkered pattern is created through a warp-dominant ribbed weave. The obi is also constructed from the saki-ori weaving technique, using rags for the weft of the obi.

Context

“Saki-ori” is derived from the verbs "saku," which means to tear, and "oru," which means to weave. The technique is characterized by the recycling of rags from old cloth, usually made of cotton, silk, or rayon fibers. In the beginnings of saki-ori, bast fibers were often used to create the warp yarns.
