When Fukumoto Shihoko started experimenting with the time-consuming and intricate resist-dyeing processes of indigo in 1976, she had even worked with interior lighting and sculptural wall decorations. Different methods of shibori (a form of bind-resist dyeing, including folding, pleating, and sewing, before the fabric is dipped into the vat) became her characteristic technique. From this traditional base, she creates innovations with great respect to her materials: ramie, linen, cotton, pineapple leaf, and washi (handmade Japanese paper), the latter applied with gold foil.Collection
