Description

Indigo-dyed textile with chrysanthemum patterns created by katazome technique. Small piece of triangular fabric stitched to the main body to complete the corner.

Context

Katazome is a traditional Japanese stencil-resist dyeing technique. Artisans apply a specialized rice flour and rice bran paste onto fabric using a hand-carved mulberry paper stencil. When the fabric is dyed, the paste-covered areas resist the color, leaving crisp-edged patterns against a vibrant dyed background.
