Description

For 35 years, Lia Cook has been a significant presence in the international art textile field, defining and defying the limits of weaving. This volume highlights Cook's earlier work -- from her 1973 proposal for the International Tapestry Biennial in Lausanne to her first Jacquard works using photographic imagery in the mid-1990s. Is it weaving? Or is it photography? The work defies conventional disciplinary boundaries. This liminal existence is a source of carefully constructed tension. On occasion, pieces slip subtly to one side or another of the divide, and Cook gently pulls them back. She re-crafts a balance between what the work is and what it is also, so that, like the images she weaves, recognition is at first somewhat obscured. Cook is perfectly comfortable mapping the contradiction. She sees her work firmly rooted to the textile tradition and simultaneously traveling loosely on the boundaries of more than one medium.
