Limoges porcelain "Empire motif" thimble, part of the Franklin Mint "Thimbles of the World’s Greatest Porcelain Houses" series.
Retailer description: "Crafted in fine Limoges china by Bernardaud, this collector’s thimble is classic in style. It’s graceful design reflects the traditional 'Empire motif' rendered entirely in gold. The maker’s mark -- B&C’ -- along with the inscription Limoges France, identifies this work as a product of Bernardaud & Cie. This distinguished French porcelain house can trace its origin back to 1863, when the Delinieres work was established in Limoges. Delinieres was one of several small porcelain houses to be founded in Limoges, a town with a time-honored tradition in the creation of fine ceramics. Ever since it was discovered that the soil in Limoges contains kaolin, the main ingredient in white porcelain, this village has been an important source for some of the world’s most beautiful and durable porcelain products. Bernardaud acquired Delinieres in 1910, and the firm has grown and progressed steadily ever since. Today Bernardaud is the largest of the Limoges porcelain houses and is also regarded as the most modern. Although automation has replaced hand work wherever possible, the skill of the experienced craftsman is still indispensable in the production of Bernardaud’s fine china. Its porcelain, fired at extremely high temperatures to produce the hardest possible glaze, is thin, perfectly white and translucent. The firm is noted for its traditional styles, but its integral design studio has in recent years introduced a number of contemporary designs."Collection
