Description

Limoges porcelain thimble with pink flowers. Part of the Franklin Mint "Thimbles of the World’s Greatest Porcelain Houses" series. Retailer description: "One of the most romantic thimbles in this collection is the Haviland porcelain thimble created in France of glazed Limoges porcelain. Decorated with blush-pink flowers with spring-green leaves, all in soft focus, it evokes a sense of romance with characteristically French design. Haviland is one of the great names in French porcelain. However, it was an American, David Haviland, who in 1842 established the first Haviland porcelain factory in Limoges. He was successful that between 1850 and 1860 Haviland accounted for half porcelain exported from France. Many of the works created during the founder’s lifetime are cherished collector’s items today. Still on display at the White House, for example, is a cup and saucer from a service he created for President Franklin Pierce. After David Haviland’s death in 1879, his descendants continued to emphasize technical excellence and expressive artistic design. A special workshop was established in Paris where new styles and decorations were developed, and Haviland became widely known for the beauty and perfection of its fine porcelain. By the turn of the century, the firm had won a succession of prizes and awards at international expositions. To this day, Haviland maintains such high standards of design and technical skill that Haviland china is collected and treasured throughout the world.”
