Plantation slave weavers remember : an oral historyEntry/Object ID
TT847.5.U6.M3Description
During the 1930s, the Florida State unit of the Federal Writers' Project began documenting oral histories of former slaves. This effort was expanded resulting in a collection of more than 10,000 pages of interviews and photographs of former slaves and children of slaves. This vast collection is housed in the Library of Congress, rarely examined by the general public. On reviewing these narratives, the author selected those descriptions of daily life on plantations relative to weaving, spinning, knitting and dyeing. These narratives, a glimpse into the lives of enslaved African-Americans, offer testimony not only to their involvement in these crafts but to the resilience and insistence of the human spirit to prevail.Lexicon
