Retailer description: "The sparkling blue and white pattern of this thimble, crafted by Ginori, one of the foremost porcelain houses of Europe, is 'Italian Fruit' which has remained a popular design since the middle of the 18th century. Until that time Ginori artists had borrowed from classical or Oriental themes. When allowed to express their own ideas, these craftsmen, being of peasant origin, naturally found inspiration in fruits and flowers such as those depicted on the thimble. Carlo Ginori had already journeyed to Japan to learn the basic china-making skills when he established his own company near Florence, Italy in 1735. The company prospered and much later, in 1821, was able to acquire the original molds for the unique Capodimonte figurines, made since 1743 at a studio near Naples. These antique molds were to become the basis for a highly prized figurine collection. In 1896 Ginori merged with the Richard Company, and Richard-Ginori remains today an honored leader in the production of fine porcelain. Over the centuries this beautiful china has charmed people of taste in all countries and has become the choice of emperors, popes and princesses. One of Ginori’s most elegant patterns, originally conceived for Napoleon Bonaparte, may be found today on the dinner table of one of television’s most celebrated personalities, and other Ginori designs grace the homes of famous international hostesses and noted luminaries in the fields of music and the arts."Collection
