Retailer description: "The windmill, which has come to be almost the trademark of The Netherlands, highlights the thimble design of Mosa, the century-old company which not only supplies well over half of Holland’s porcelain requirements but is highly regarded all over Western Europe. Windmills such as those depicted on the thimble predate Mosa by many hundreds of years, since they probably originated in Europe sometime during the 12th century, becoming familiar in England, France and Germany, and particularly in Holland. Mosa is headquartered in the city of Maastricht, capital and chief industrial center of the province of Limburger in the southeastern Netherlands. The city is situated on the Maas river, called 'Meuse' by the French. A settlement grew up near a spot where the Romans had built a bridge, and Maastricht derives its name from the Latin Mosae Trajectum. The city occupies an important place in Holland’s cultural and religious history. The oldest church in The Netherlands, founded in the 6th century, is located there, as are many other handsome historic buildings. A comparative newcomer in this ancient city, which has been a center of the ceramic industry for several centuries, Mosa began creating porcelain tableware in 1883. The company gained early fame for its “blue chinaware” decorated with exotic Chinese figures. Today Mosa operates three plants in Maastricht, producing ceramic wall and floor tile as well as fine porcelain dinnerware."Collection
