Description

Kimono obi, or sash for traditional Japanese dress, made using a saki-ori weaving technique. Rags in shades of blue, green, brown, white, and black create defined stripes along its length.

Context

“Saki-ori” is derived from the verbs "saku," which means to tear, and "oru," which means to weave. The technique is characterized by the recycling of rags from old cloth, usually made of cotton, silk, or rayon fibers. Bast fibers were traditionally used to create the warp yarns.
