Description

Hand-carved woodblock used in traditional block printing. Design features Paulownia flowers and gourds.

Use

Used for the itajime dyeing process. This board would have been just one of many cut in the mirror image, and cloth would have been interwoven through the boards, with boards facing each other. The boards and fabric would then be submerged in a dye vat, with pressure applied. The result was a resist dye, with the pressure from the raised carvings leaving the fabric undyed.
