Farber's 95th birthday With love and admiration, Farber and Noddle Families To our dear friend Steve Simon on his birthday With love, Phyllis and Dick Glazer, ShenTn and Amold Joffe, Jane and Harlan Rips, Hermene and Speedy Zweiback Congregant Bette Novit Evans, an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Creighton Universig, spoke recently at Temple on the Constitution's "Free Exercise of Rellgion" clause. Excerpts follow: Increasingly, people seek protection under the First Amendment for activities that would not previously have been con- sidered religious. Religion isn't just theology or medita- tion, and it isn't either just about what you eat or what you do when your kid tums 13. But both are equally crucial, and I realized that any adequate account of the religious freedom must encompass both. To treat religion as a choice is to trivi- aliTe religious obligations...indeed, if reli- gious practices were matters of choice, there would be far less powerful reason for protecting them; it is their obligatory character that makes the protection of these acts seem so compelling. Religion is powerful precisely because it is not a choice, but a command--an obligation which the believer does not choose. In this view, the point of religious liberty is to protect people from agonizing conflicts between obligations to the state and to religious commands. I t ti \ TEMPLE ISRAEL OFFERS HEALING SERVICE The congregation's first weekday Healing Service will be Tuesday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Livingston Chapel. The concept for this service grew from the work of the Synagogue 2000 committee who have realized that there are times when an individual may need more than the regular Shabbat Services provide in the areas of wholeness and well-being. If you, a friend, or a family member are in need of additional healing for physi- cal, emotional or spiritual comfort or if, perhaps, your presence at a healing ser- vice would provide strength to others, please join us for this special evening ser- vice. The healing service is not meant to replace any other service but is intended to bring an additional layer of comfort and contentment to those who attend. The service will be rather informal and will include prayers read by congregants, as well as clergy. Distinctive music will crate a mood of wholeness, renewal and healing. If you cannot attend this service, we hope you will come to one of the services planned in the coming months. If you need a ride to Temple, please call 556- 6536. Former Temple Israel Cantor Hal Firestone will present his new composi- tions at this concert. He will be joined by Hazzan Erik Contzius and Tamara Field. Julie Sandene is accompanist. Original compositions by Cantor Firestone and Hazzan Contzius will be included, along with songs and popular music by other composers and lyricists. The concert reunites Firestone and Donald Schwartz who have collaborated on new songs which will premiere at the concert. The day will also unveil the col- laborative efforts of Hazzan Contzius and Don Schwartz who are working on original songs premiering at the concert. Bring your family and friends to a wonderful aftemoon. The concert, spon- sored by Temple's Music Committee, is free and open to the public. The Music Committee will host a community concert in June, "Thre, Cantors and a Rabbi or Two." Be sure to- look for this upcoming announcement. Those wishing to make contributions may contact the Music Committee through the temple office.
