Historical Background and OverviewNote
The modest wooden mantel and fireplace surround in the Library is among the oldest objects in the structure, dating to the 1802 construction. The room served as the bedroom for Secretary of State James Monroe and his wife Elizabeth Kortright Monroe's younger daughter, Maria Hester Monroe, when they resided in the home from 1811 to 1817. In 1820, Maria would become the first presidential offspring married in the White House.
