Historical Background and OverviewNote
Bertha E. Noyes (1876-1966) was born in Washington, D.C. She studied at the Arts Students League of Washington and the Corcoran School of the Arts, specializing in portraiture, and later became known for her landscape and figure painting. She traveled to the Southwestern United States and Central and South America, and her work often depicted these places. She was continually active in the Washington art scene and was one of the principal founders of the Club, inspired in part by her association with the Providence Art Club of which she was a member. The Arts Club of Washington was founded in her home at 610 21st Street, N.W., before moving soon thereafter to its current home at 2017 I Street, N.W.
Noyes' art has been exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery, the Rhode Island School of Design and the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Rochester, New York.
While the style of dress implies the early 20th century, the beautiful oil on canvas painting is not dated.
