Arthur Franklyn Musgrave (1878-1969)
Arthur F. Musgrave became the Arts Club’s third president in 1923. He was born in Brighton, England, and studied under Stanhope Forbes at the Newlyn School of Art in Cornwall. After serving in World War I, he moved to the United States in 1916 for health reasons, and was active in Santa Fe, New Mexico, before moving to DC around 1920 where he worked in the British embassy. He was active in DC, painting landscapes and local scenes. He was a prolific artist and partook in many exhibitions for much of his life in New Mexico and all across the East Coast, including Massachusetts, where he passed away in 1969. The caricature seems to allude to how much work he produced, as he appears to be depicted wearing a smock over a suit, wielding multiple different brushes in one hand and carrying an as-of-yet unpainted canvas. This particular version by Arts Club member Gladys Kazigian is a reproduction of the original lost Berryman caricature.
