Caricatures of past Arts Club presidents by Clifford Kennedy Berryman.Context
Lewis L. Moneyway (1882-1963)
Lewis Lofton Moneyway was Arts Club president in 1936 and 1937. Originally from Alabama, Moneyway became a prominent writer and teacher after moving to DC, teaching short-story writing at George Washington University and establishing the Moneyway Studios for Short-Story Writing in 1924. He also spent time teaching in his hometown of Mobile. He would go on to be a judge for many short-story competitions, as he was well-known in the field not just for his teaching, but also for his short stories which regularly appeared in leading magazines.
In Berryman’s caricature, we see Moneway surrounded by books, addressing a Teddy Bear, saying “Your dad [Clifford K. Berryman] can draw. Listen to me and you’ll be able to write!” Source: Max Gilder, intern for the Arts Club during the spring semester of 2021 while a student at the University of Maryland.Made/Created
