Gladys Kazigian was raised in Florida, New York, and Washington. As a young woman, Kazigian worked
for Washington’s Harris & Ewing, Inc., one of the largest photographic studios in the United States at the
time, where she hand-colored photographic portraits. She became well-known in the local art
community for her portrait artistry, and opened a teaching studio, which she called “The Palette.” She
also taught painting at The American University and at the Club where she was a longtime member. In
addition to this portrait of Dorothy Clark Winchcole, Kazigian she did several caricatures of Club presidents
that hang in the Club library alongside the Berryman cartoons.
