Gladys Kazigian was raised in Florida, New York, and Washington. As a young woman, Kazigian worked for Washington’s Harris & Ewing, Inc., one of the largest photographic studios in the United States at the time, where she hand-colored photographic portraits. She became well-known in the local art community for her portrait artistry, and opened a teaching studio, which she called “The Palette.” She also taught painting at The American University and at the Club where she was a longtime member. In addition to this portrait of Dorothy Clark Winchcole, Kazigian she did several caricatures of Club presidents that hang in the Club library alongside the Berryman cartoons. Dorothy Clark Winchcole (1895–1983) was a Washington native and author of "The First Baptists in Washington, DC, 1802-1952". She was a generous patron of the arts and education through the Clark-Winchcole Foundation which she helped to establish in 1964. Source: Arts Club Docents' Handbook.
