Caricatures of past Arts Club presidents by Clifford Kennedy Berryman.Context
Will Croft Barnes (1858 - 1936)
Will C. Barnes became the Arts Club president in 1929. A San Franciscan, he began as a musician before enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he received the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery during the battle of Fort Apache, Arizona. After leaving in 1883, he worked as a cattleman for a while, after which he did work as a public official and as a legislator in Arizona and New Mexico. He moved to DC in 1907 and became part of the Forestry Service of the Department of Agriculture, where he served for 21 years until his retirement. He published numerous works relating to his life on the Western plains. This explains the caricature, wherein he is depicted with a 10-gallon hat, sitting among the cacti, pen and paper in hand, a lizard watching over his shoulder.
