James Monroe (1758-1831) and his wife Elizabeth Kortright Monroe (1786-1830) lived at 2017 I Street, NW (the home of the Arts Club of Washington) from approximately 1811, when Monroe served as Secretary of State under President James Madison, through his election in 1816 and inauguration as the fifth President of the United States on March 4, 1817. Due to the burning of the White House by the British in 1814 during the War of 1812, Monroe was unable to occupy the White House until the fall of 1817 and 2017 I Street NW served as Monroe's Executive Mansion during the first months of his administration.Dimensions
