Description

Part A) Black waist-length silk bodice with floral lace collar and ivory cotton yoke insert. Neckline edged with ball fringe. Yoke insert is machine worked with circular pattern, and fastens to blouse with hook and eye fasteners. Lace collar is black and machine worked, in imitation of point de Venice. Front of bodice edged with similar imitation-Venetian black lace and trimmed with a band of flat lace. Wrist opening of arms edged with same imitation-Venetian lace as front of bodice, and trimmed with ruffled lace band. Arms each have slit in wrist opening that fastens with four snap fasteners, ornamented with four self-covered buttons. Bodice fastens asymmetrically in front with snap fasteners. Lengthy loose thread from lace ruffle on right sleeve; possible discolouration on yoke. Part B) Black floor-length silk skirt with slight train. Bell-shaped. Embroidered white "X" in waistband to denote front of skirt. Asymmetrical front opening with floor-length seam. This seam ornamented with three oval-shaped decorative patches sewn vertically midway down length of skirt; seam then parts at bottom to reveal triangular black insert. Darts at waist. Skirt fastens with hook and eye as well as snap fasteners. Part C) Black detachable silk peplum. Lined with black damask weave, showing bows and floral sprigs. Fastens around waist with single hook and eye fastener.

Use

Belonged to the donor's great grandmother. Her family had moved from Scotland directly to Vancouver circa 1926 (due to the U.K. General Strike), taking this dress with them.
