Description

Part A) Long grey taffeta (?) skirt. Elasticated band at waist with hook closure at left hip. Grey belt attached around waist. At both front and back of skirt is a rectangular length of material faced in the back with grey silk. Bottom of each length is embroidered in light grey and pinks. Part B) Left front of a grey taffeta (?) bodice with a rectangle of bright pink ruffled fabric underneath the neckline. Back is lined with brown cotton. Part C) Right front of a grey taffeta (?) bodice, same as Part B. Part D) Back of a grey taffeta (?) bodice, shaped. Inside is lined with brown cotton, with five lengths of grey taffeta over seams at locations where boning would presumably be inserted. Part E) Thin rectangular length of grey silk, same as that used on skirt. Fabric is covered with vermicular grey decoration. Part F-J) Pieces of grey taffeta (?) cut in various shapes.

Context

The material and what original structure remains of this deconstructed dress suggests that it was originally made in the late 19th century. It was later taken apart sometime during the First World War, to be remade into a different style during a time of serious rationing.
