Shears for trimming hedges, lawns, &c. are provided with a removable device which moves over the surface supporting the shears during the cutting operation. The bow member a2, b2, Figs. 1 and 2, of the shears is divided and pivoted at e to an extension c of an inclined bar c1, the extension c carrying a handle d by which the shears are held. The inclined bar c1 has a transverse piece c2, to which is fixed a blade a of the shears, the other blade b being movable. The blades a, b are kept apart by a spring 4 attached to the bar c1. A bar f, pivoted at 5 to the shank a1 of the blade a and passing through a slot in the shank b1 of the blade b, is pivoted at 6 to a triangular piece f1, which is fixed to the handle f2 and carries a roller 7 bearing on the outer convex surface of the shank b1. By actuating the handle f2, the blade a, b are forced together by the roller 7. For cutting grass, the supporting-device consists of a roller g, Fig. 3, carried by a yoke g1 having pairs of lugs 8, which engage opposite sides of the bar c1, the yoke being held in any desired position on the bar by a spring 10, the free ends of which engage a longitudinal groove in the bar. The position of the yoke on the bar c1 determines the height of the grass cut. For trimming hedges, the supporting-device consists of a metal plate h, Fig. 7, adjustably connected to the bar c1 by the standard h1 and screw 11. As shown, the plate h is in the same plane as the blades, being notched to receive the end of the bar c1; but the plate may be made so as to be below the plane of the blades. A hook is provided on the bow b2, to engage the handle f2 and hold it in the closed position for packing.Cataloged By
