Knives, scissors, &c. -- Two or more flat sheets of steel placed together with a suitable overlap are passed through specially constructed rolls so as to produce a sheet of steel which shall be of two thicknesses; these sheets are cut into strips, the thicker part of which forms the bolster and tang or bolster and handle, and the thinner portion the blade. Or the rolls may be constructed so as to impress upon the steel passed through, those ridges which are afterwards formed into bolsters by pressure or by other rollers; or the rolls may be fitted with gates to receive dies for forming handles or other projection on the sheet. The steel may be cast in ingots of special form, which when cut into strips may be passed through tolls or submitted direct to the forging process. Bolsters may be formed by simple pressure in the direction of the tang. The articles are finished in the forging process by special smooth-faced dies to lessen the amount of grinding and polishing.
